Psalm 126 It seemed like a dream, too good to be true, when God returned Zion’s exiles.
We laughed, we sang, we couldn’t believe our good fortune. We were the talk of the nations - “God was wonderful to them!” God was wonderful to us; we are one happy people. And now, God, do it again - bring rains to our drought-stricken lives. So those who planted their crops in despair will shout hurrahs at the harvest, So those who went off with heavy hearts will come home laughing, with armloads of blessing.
The Israelites remember a time in their history when everything was good -- the day when God returned the exiles to Jerusalem. Now, as they face a drought, they remind themselves, and remind God, of what God has done previously to save them. The Psalmist reminds us of the power of memory. One of the reasons we trust in God to save us now and in the future is because God has saved God's people in the past. We look to future expecting Christ to come again because Christ has already come as the Christ-child.
